Clouds in the sky

One of the hardest questions we face is: “Why do good and godly people die?” It can feel unfair when someone who faithfully followed God, loved others, and lived a righteous life is suddenly taken from this world. The Bible doesn’t shy away from this question—it acknowledges the tension while pointing us to eternal hope.

The Bible’s Perspective on Death

  1. Death Is a Part of Living in a Fallen World

Scripture reminds us that death is the result of sin entering the world through Adam and Eve.

“Just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned.” (Romans 5:12, ESV)

Even the righteous aren’t exempt from the brokenness of this world. But death is not the end for those who belong to God.

  2. The Death of the Righteous Is Precious to God

Psalm 116:15 tells us: “Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his faithful servants.”

When a righteous person dies, it’s not meaningless. God values their life and welcomes them into His presence.

  3. Sometimes God Spares the Righteous from Future Trouble

Isaiah 57:1 gives us an often-overlooked perspective: “The righteous perish, and no one takes it to heart; the devout are taken away, and no one understands that the righteous are taken away to be spared from evil.”

Sometimes, God allows His people to leave this world earlier to protect them from suffering or hardship that lies ahead.

  4. To Be with Christ Is Far Better

Paul, reflecting on life and death, declared: “For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.” (Philippians 1:21, NIV)

For the believer, death is not a tragedy but a transition into the presence of Jesus—a place with no pain, sorrow, or tears (Revelation 21:4).

Encouragement for Us Today

  • We grieve, but with hope.1 Thessalonians 4:13 reminds us that while we mourn, we don’t grieve like those without hope. For the righteous, death is not defeat—it is victory through Christ.

  • God’s timing is perfect.Even when it feels unfair, God knows the full picture. He is sovereign and His ways are higher than ours (Isaiah 55:8–9).

  • Eternal life is the ultimate promise.Jesus said:

“I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die.” (John 11:25, NIV)

For believers, death is simply the doorway to eternal life with Him.

The Bible shows us that the death of the righteous is not meaningless or overlooked. God sees, God cares, and God has a greater purpose—even when we cannot understand it. Their departure reminds us of the eternal hope we have in Christ: death is not the end, but the beginning of forever with Him.

So when righteous people leave this world, we can be comforted that they are in the presence of their Savior, free from pain and sorrow, and awaiting the day when we will be reunited with them in glory.
