Palm Sunday: The Day Jesus Changed Expectations

Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week, the final week leading up to Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection. It commemorates Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem, an event recorded in all four Gospels (Matthew 21:1-11, Mark 11:1-11, Luke 19:28-40, John 12:12-19). This moment was both a fulfillment of prophecy and a powerful declaration of who Jesus is. But why does Palm Sunday matter?

What Happened on Palm Sunday?

Jesus Rides into Jerusalem on a Donkey

As Jesus approached Jerusalem, He told His disciples to find a young donkey for Him to ride. This fulfilled the prophecy in Zechariah 9:9, which said: “Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey.”

Unlike earthly kings who rode war horses, Jesus entered humbly on a donkey, symbolizing that His kingdom was not about military power but peace and salvation.

The Crowds Praise Jesus

People lined the streets, waving palm branches and laying their cloaks on the road—a sign of honor and recognition of royalty. They shouted: “Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!” (Matthew 21:9)

• Hosanna means “Save us now!” The people hoped Jesus would be a political king who would overthrow the Romans.

• They recognized Him as the Messiah, but they misunderstood His mission.

Why Is Palm Sunday Significant?

Jesus Declared Himself as King

By riding into Jerusalem in this way, Jesus was openly revealing Himself as the promised King and Messiah. Before this, He often told people to keep His identity quiet, but now, He was fulfilling prophecy publicly.

It Marked the Beginning of the Road to the Cross

Palm Sunday was a celebration, but it was also the beginning of Jesus’ final journey to suffering and death. In just a few days, the same people shouting “Hosanna!” would cry out, “Crucify Him!”

A Misunderstood Messiah

The people wanted a king to save them from Rome, but Jesus came to save them from sin. Their expectations didn’t align with God’s plan, showing how easy it is to miss what God is really doing.
